COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Benedict College Lady Tigers committed 38 turnovers, and Fort Valley State scored 32 points off those turnovers as the Lady Wildcats took a 54-49 victory in a SIAC women's basketball contest on Monday night in the Benjamin E. Mays HRC Arena.
Benedict scored the first eight points of the game and had a 12-4 lead at the end of the first quarter. Fort Valley State rallied in the second quarter, scoring the first 15 points of the second quarter to take a 19-12 lead. Benedict trailed 21-17 at the half.
The Lady Tigers tied the score on three occasions in the third quarter, but never could take the lead.
Alaysia Nash sank two free throws to close out the third quarter to tie the score at 33.
The Lady Wildcats (7-7 overall, 6-4 SIAC) pulled ahead 49-38, their largest lead of the game, with 3:23 left to play. The Lady Tigers stormed back to cut the lead to 50-47 with 45 seconds left, but Fort Valley State scored a layup with 24 seconds left. Nash sank two free throws with 17 seconds left, but the Lady Wildcats sealed the game with two free throws with under one second remaining.
Nash scored a career-high 22 points for the Lady Tigers and grabbed a career-high eight rebounds to lead the Lady Tigers.
Benedict, now 3-14 overall and 1-9 in the SIAC, is home Saturday to take on Allen University at 1 p.m.
