COLUMBIA, S.C. – Benedict College had a 2-0 lead, then held off Clark Atlanta as the Panthers won the second two sets, and won the fifth set to take a 3-2 victory on Friday night in a SIAC women's volleyball match in the Benjamin E. Mays HRC Arena.
Benedict won the first two sets 25-23 and 25-19 before Clark Atlanta won the next two sets, 25-21, 25-9. The Lady Tigers used a 6-0 run in the deciding fifth set to take the lead and held on for the 15-13 victory.
Benedict improves to 14-8 overall and 9-6 in the SIAC. Clark Atlanta falls to 12-11 overall and 9-6 in the SIAC.
T'yannah Lake had a career-high 17 kills to lead the Lady Tigers.
Kaiah Green had nine kills, including back-to-back kills to break a 12-12 tie in the fifth set. Clark Atlanta cut the lead to 14-13 with a kill, then
Desire' Young closed out the match with a kill. Young finished with eight kills.
Angelic Carter had a season-high seven solo blocks.
Brandi Seaborn recorded 19 digs, and
Willow Alls had a double-double with 32 assists and 16 digs.
Clark Atlanta had a 23-21 lead in the first set, but the Lady Tigers scored the final four points on a Lady Panther error and two kills by Young and one kill by Green. Benedict had a 17-13 lead in the second set before the Lady Tigers scored seven of the next eight points to take a 24-14 lead. Clark scored the next five points before Carter closed out the set with a kill.
The fourth set was close, with Clark Atlanta holding a 20-19 lead, and then closed out the set by scoring five of the final seven points. The Lady Panthers jumped out to an early big lead, holding leads of 10-4 and then 18-7. A late 6-0 run gave Clark Atlanta a 24-8 lead and won 25-9 to force the deciding fifth set.
Benedict is on the road to take on Paine College in Augusta, Ga., on Wednesday in a non-conference match.
