COLUMBIA, S.C. – Carolina University scored six of the final nine points in the deciding fifth set to take a 3-2 victory over the Benedict College men's volleyball team in a non-conference match on Tuesday night in the Benjamin E. Mays HRC Arena.
Carolina University won the match 23-25, 25-20, 25-17, 20-25, 15-10 to improve to 5-8 on the season.
The Tigers, now 0-8 overall, hit a season-high .178, as
Camron Petillo had 16 kills and
De'Andrae Taylor had 10 kills.
Kendersley Marcellin had 40 assists, while
Clint Forbes led the defense with 14 digs.
The Tigers rallied from a 23-20 deficit in the first set, scoring the final five points, to capture the first set.
Jackson Fehring-Terrell scored a kill for the final point.
The second set was tied at 16 when the Bruins scored six of the next seven points for a 22-17 lead and won the set on a kill. The Bruins jumped out to a 15-7 lead in the second set and went on to take the second set. Benedict scored six points in a row early in the fourth set to take a 10-3 lead. Carolina got within 22-19, but the Tigers closed out the set with kills by Taylor,
Zion Beckford, and another kill by Taylor to close out the set.
Carolina jumped out early to a 6-2 lead in the fifth set. Benedict scored three points in a row, all by Carolina University errors, to cut the lead to 9-7. The Bruins scored four of the next five points for a 13-8 lead, and then the two teams swapped points, with the Bruins scoring a pair of kills to clinch the match.
Benedict is back in action at 6 p.m. on Friday with a home SIAC conference match against defending SIAC champion Edward Waters.
