FRANFORT, Ky. – Benedict College won the first two sets, but Kentucky State rallied back to win the final three and take a 3-2 victory in a SIAC men's volleyball match on Saturday.
Kentucky State won the match 21-25, 22-25, 25-21, 25-20, 15-9 to improve to 3-8 overall and 2-2 in the SIAC. Benedict falls to 1-12 overall and 1-4 in the SIAC.
Zion Beckford had a career-high 16 kills for the Tigers.
Jackson Fehring-Terrell added 12 kills.
Kendersley Marcellin had 39 assists and 13 digs, while
Clint Forbes recorded 22 digs.
Benedict had an 18-17 lead in the first set, then pulled away by scoring seven of the next 11 points. Beckford ended the set with a kill.
The Tigers used a 7-2 run in the second set to pull ahead and take a 15-13 lead. With the scored tied at 15, the Tigers then scored five of the next six points for a 20-16 lead. The Thorobreds got within 21-20, but Beckford had back-to-back kills for the Tigers. Beckford also scored the final point with a kill.
Kentucky State took an early lead in the third set, but the Tigers were able to rally back and cut the lead to 21-19. The Thorobreds scored three of the final four points in the set on two Benedict errors and an ace.
The Thorobreds jumped out to another big lead in the fourth set, leading 9-2 and 18-9. Benedict got within 23-20, but Kentucky State closed out the set with a kill and a Benedict attack error.
In the fifth set, Kentucky State took an early 7-2 lead. Benedict rallied to cut the lead to 11-9, but the Thorobreds scored the final four points to clinch the match.
The Tigers travel to take on Fort Valley State on March 22.
