COLUMBIA, S.C. – Edward Waters jumped out to an early big lead and held off a second-half rally by Benedict to take a 65-57 victory in a SIAC women's basketball game on Saturday afternoon in the Benjamin E. Mays HRC Arena.
Edward Waters had a 16-point lead, 23-7, at the end of the first quarter, and built as much as a 26-point lead, 35-9, in the second quarter. Benedict was able to cut the lead to 42-27 at the half.
In the third quarter, Benedict held Edward Waters to just seven points, and was able to trim the lead to seven points at one point, and trailed 49-40 heading into the fourth quarter. Edward Waters pushed the lead back to 13 points early in the fourth quarter, but Benedict scored the next four points to make it 59-50 with 4:48 left to play. Edward Waters scored the next four points and held on for the victory to improve to 10-6 overall and 6-5 in the SIAC.
Taiyee Treasure scored a Benedict career-high 14 points to lead Benedict.
Ghylissa Knowles hit four 3-pointers for 12 points, and
Alaysia Nash added 11 points.
The Lady Tigers, now 7-9 overall and 5-6 in the SIAC, are back in action on Monday when they host Savannah State at 5:30 p.m.
