SAVANNAH, Ga. – Savannah State hit .248 as a team, committing just 14 errors on 109 total attempts, to take a 3-1 victory over Benedict College in a SIAC women's volleyball match on Thursday.
Savannah State won the match 25-11, 25-19, 15-25, 25-14, to improve to 15-6 overall and 11-4 in the SIAC. Benedict falls to 15-7 overall and 9-6 in the SIAC.
Mia Burgess led the Lady Tigers with 13 kills, while
Desire' Young added 11 kills.
Willow Alls had 23 assists and a team-high nine digs.
Savannah State used a 10-0 run in the first set to pull away and take the set. Savannah State kept the momentum at the start of the second set, jumping out to a 7-1 early lead and held off a late Benedict rally.
Benedict came out strong in the third set, using an early 9-0 run to take a 16-6 lead.
La'Jai Wilson had a pair of aces during that surge. Savannah State cut the lead to 16-12. Then Benedict scored the next four points, with Alls serving a pair of aces. Benedict closed out the set by scoring the final three points, with the final point coming on another ace by
Jadyn Murry.
The fourth set was close, with Savannah State holding a 15-13 lead, before scoring 10 of the next 11 points to seal the match.
The Lady Tigers return home to take on Fort Valley State, the top team in the SIAC East Division, at 6 p.m. on Wednesday in the HRC Arena.
