Albany State Tops Benedict In NCAA Playoffs, 14-12

ALBANY, Ga. – Benedict College's historic playoff run came to an end on Saturday, as Albany State beat the Tigers for the third time this season, 14-12, in the NCAA Division 2 Football Championship.

Benedict ends its season at 10-3, with all three losses coming at the hands of the Golden Rams. Albany State will host Newberry College, a 24-17 winner over West Florida, next week in the quarterfinals.

In a championship-caliber defensive battle, the Tigers were held to eight first downs and 186 yards of total offense. Benedict gave up 336 yards of total offense, but limited the Golden Rams to 3-of-13 on third downs, and kept the Golden Rams pinned deep with some stellar punting by Kolten Ford.

After the Golden Rams scored on a 41-yard pass on their second offensive series in the first quarter to take a 7-0 lead, the Tigers were able to get a pair of field goals from Zane Spires – a 43-yarder with 11 seconds left in the first quarter and a 30-yarder with 6:12 remaining in the second quarter to cut the lead to 7-6 at the half.

Albany State capped off an 89-yard drive in the fourth quarter with quarterback Isaiah Knowles scoring on a one-yard run to make it 14-6 with 7:41 left in the game.

The Tigers responded with a 70-yard drive with David Smith finishing things off with a nine-yard touchdown run. Benedict attempted a two-point conversion, but Jackson Jensen's pass in the end zone was incomplete.

Benedict had one last chance to stop the Golden Rams and force a punt, but they completed a 21-yard pass on third-and-10 and then were able to run out the clock.

Smith led the Tigers in rushing with 74 yards on 12 carries.

Omari Terry had 12 tackles to lead the defense, including 3.5 tackles for loss for -22 yards, a 19-yard sack and a forced fumble. Isaiah Stephens had 10 tackles, with 2.5 tackles for loss for -10 yards, an 8-yard sack and a forced fumble. The Benedict defense registered 14 tackles for loss and six sacks on the afternoon.

Ford punted eight times for a 39.5 yard average, with five of those punts inside the 20-yard line, and two for more than 50 yards.
