COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Benedict College Lady Tigers went more than two minutes without a field goal down the stretch as Allen University pulled away from a close game to take a 76-72 victory in a SIAC women's basketball game on Saturday afternoon in Allen's John Hurst Adams Gymnasium.
Benedict had as much as an 11-point lead, 53-42, in the third quarter, but Allen (11-6 overall, 7-4 in the SIAC) went on a 10-2 run and the Lady Tigers had just a 56-55 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
The fourth quarter was a back-and-forth affair, with Allen holding a 67-66 lead with 3:49 remaining after a three-point play by
Aniyah Scales. Allen went on a 7-1 run, before
Taiyee Treasure scored a layup with 1:22 left to play to make it 74-69. A free throw by
Aaliyah Lawrence made it a three-point game, 75-72, with just nine seconds left. Benedict turned the ball over with five seconds remaining and Allen sealed the game with a free throw.
Taylor Christmas led Benedict (7-12 overall, 5-8 in the SIAC) with 14 points, while Scales, Lawrence and
Alaysia Nash all chipped in 10 points each.
The Lady Tigers travel to Savannah to take on Savannah State next Saturday at 1 p.m.
