COLUMBIA, S.C. – The undefeated Benedict College Tigers will put their SIAC-leading defense to the test against the high-octane Clark Atlanta Panthers in a key conference battle on Saturday.
Kickoff from Panther Stadium is 3 p.m. The game will be available to watch on the
SIAC network. Live stats are available
here.
Benedict, 3-0 overall and 2-0 in the SIAC, leads the SIAC and is ranked fourth in Division II in scoring defense, allowing just eight points per game. The Tigers also rank second in the SIAC in total defense, and 20
th in D2, allowing 283.3 yards per game.
Clark Atlanta, 2-2 overall and 1-1 in the SIAC, is averaging 27.3 points per game (5
th in the SIAC) and 337 yards of offense per game (5
th in the SIAC). Clark Atlanta is coming off a 49-38 loss to Allen last week.
"Clark Atlanta has a high-powered offense," said Benedict head coach
Ron Dickerson Jr. "They've put up a ton of points this year. Their defense is a strenuous one. They're going to give you multiple fronts and they're going to pressure you. Since coach Keaton's been there, they've been a powerhouse in the SIAC."
Xzavier Jackson, a true freshman, threw for 244 yards and four touchdowns last week against Allen. Zy McDonald has thrown for 644 yards and five touchdowns. Neither quarterback has thrown an interception.
The Tigers have intercepted two passes in the first three games and rank second in the SIAC and 12
th in Division II in pass defense efficiency, allowing opponents an efficiency rating of 97.15 and a completion percentage of just 49.4 percent.
"It's going to be a good game," Dickerson said. "They're one of the best, if not the best, offenses in the conference. It's going to put a big burden on the defense, but also put a burden on us offensively that we have to take care of the ball and move the ball."
The Tigers are coming off a season-high 45 points and 380 yards of offense in last week's 45-24 victory over Tuskegee.
Following Saturday's game, the Tigers return home next week to take on rival Allen University at 2 p.m.
