COLUMBIA, S.C. – After a month away, the Benedict Tigers return to Charlie W. Johnson Stadium to take on the Clark Atlanta University Panthers at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
Â
Benedict, now 3-1 overall and 1-1 in the SIAC following last week's 20-17 loss at Tuskegee, is anxious to get back home and earn another victory. And the struggling Panthers (1-4 overall, 1-2 in the SIAC) could be just the solution.
Â
The Tigers have won six straight in the series against the Panthers, including a dominating 59-24 victory last year in Atlanta. Benedict holds a 15-7-1 advantage in the all-time series, dating back to 1955 when the two teams tied 20-20. Clark Atlanta has not beaten Benedict in 10 years, taking a 27-14 victory in 2016 in Atlanta.
Â
Still, Benedict head coach
Ron Dickerson Jr. is not taking the Panthers lightly, and knows the Tigers have to fix some of the problems that plagued them against Tuskegee 10 days ago on national television.
Â
Benedict comes into the game leading the SIAC in rushing yards per game at 207.8 yards per game. The Tigers have two of the top rushers in the conference in
David Smith (83 yards per game, 2
nd in the SIAC) and
Christopher Johnson (58.3 yards per game, 8
th in the SIAC).
On the flip side, Clark Atlanta ranks 11
th in the SIAC in rushing defense, allowing opponents an average of more than 188 yards per game.
Â
Benedict ranks third in the SIAC and 40
th in Division II in total offense, averaging 417.8 yards per game. Clark Atlanta ranks 10
th in the SIAC, giving up an average of 412.4 yards per game.
Â
The Panthers have struggled with the ball as well. Clark Atlanta ranks 11
th out of 13 teams in the SIAC in total offense, averaging just 238.6 yards per game, and rank 12
th in scoring, averaging 13 points per game. The Benedict defense ranks fifth in the SIAC in total defense, and are second in scoring defense.
