COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Benedict Tigers men's volleyball team recorded a season-high 11 blocks to sweep Truett McConnell 3-0 on Monday night in the Benjamin E. Mays HRC Arena.
Three days after falling to Truett McConnell 3-1 on the road, the Tigers hit an impressive .259 and won the match 25-21, 25-19, 26-24 to improve to 3-3 on the season. Truett McConnell falls to 5-8.
Truett McConnell had a 21-19 lead in the first set before the Tigers scored the final six points.
Denzel Pepper led off the final stretch with a kill, and also served an ace, while
Mallik Foreman had a pair of kills. An attack error by the Bears closed out the first set.
The second set was close again, with the score tied at 13 midway through the set. The Tigers started to pull away by scoring the next three points on a kill by
Hakan Godoy and a pair of Truett McConnell attack errors. Another 3-0 spurt gave Benedict a 21-15 lead. The Tigers closed out the set with a kill from Godoy and a Truett McConnell error.
Benedict used a 6-0 run in the third set to take a 16-10 lead, but the Bears came back to tie the score at 17. The score then went back and forth, with Truett McConnell taking a 24-23 lead. The Tigers fended off set point with a kill by
Camron Petillo to tie the score. A kill by
Jared Brown gave Benedict a 25-24 lead, and Benedict won the match on another error by Truett McConnell.
Brown led the Tigers with 10 kills. Petillo and Godoy had eight kills each.
Kaden Hoyte recorded 27 assists, and
Cameron Long had 10 digs.
Benedict travels to Life University in Marietta, Ga., on Wednesday for a 6 p.m. match.
