PETERSBURG, Va. – The Benedict College Lady Tigers won the Black College Invitational Championship on Saturday with a 66-62 victory over Bowie State.
The Lady Tigers (19-9 overall) outscored Bowie State 12-2 to end the second quarter and take a 40-31 lead at the half. Benedict increased its lead to as much as 15 points, 52-37, in the third quarter and took a 55-43 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
Bowie State (20-9 overall) rallied to cut the lead to 62-60 with 3:07 left in the game.
Gwendasia Page answered with a 3-pointer for the final field goal of the contest. Bowie State hit two free throws with 1:31 on the clock to make it 65-62.
Aaliyah Lawrence sealed the game with a free throw with 16 seconds remaining.
Raven Johnson scored a season-high 21 points and grabbed a season-high 13 rebounds to lead the Lady Tigers.
Andrea Duncan added 13 points.
The BCIC championship wrapped up a successful season for the Lady Tigers, who won five of their final six games, and had a seven-game winning streak during the season. The 19 wins are the most since going 23-8 during the 2021-22 season.
