FRANKFORT, Ky. – The Benedict College men's volleyball team took a 3-0 victory over Kentucky State on Saturday, prevailing in three closely contested sets.
The Tigers won the match 25-21, 25-22, 25-19 to improve to 8-6 overall and 4-2 in the SIAC. Kentucky State falls to 6-18 overall and 0-5 in the SIAC.
The first set was tied at 17 before the Tigers scored six straight points to take a commanding 23-17 lead.
Camron Petillo had a pair of kills in that span, while
Roy Berry also added a kill. The Thorobreds closed the gap to 24-21 with three straight points, but Benedict closed out the set on a Kentucky State attack error.
Benedict jumped out to an early 7-2 lead in the second set, but the Thorobreds closed the gap and used a 6-1 run to take a 19-18 lead. A kill by
Denzel Pepper and a Kentucky State error gave Benedict a 21-20 lead. After the Thorobreds scored to tie the score at 21, the Tigers got a kill from
Jared Brown and a service ace from Pepper to take a 23-21 lead. After a KSU point, Benedict finished off the set with back-to-back kills from Brown and
Hakan Godoy.
The third set was tied at 12 at the midway point, but the Tigers started to separate with five straight points on a kill by Godoy and four Kentucky State errors. A kill by Pepper made it 23-15, but the Thorobreds closed the gap to 24-19. Benedict wrapped up the match after a Kentucky State error.
Benedict will return home to wrap up the regular season with a pair of matches against Central State on Wednesday (6 p.m.) and Thursday (5 p.m.).
