ROCK HILL, S.C. – The Benedict College Lady Tigers won the final two sets in a tight battle to beat the Clinton College Golden Bears 3-2 in a non-conference women's volleyball match on Friday night.
Benedict won the match 26-24, 15-25, 20-25, 25-23, 16-14 to improve to 3-1 overall on the season. Clinton falls to 2-6.
Clinton had a 2-1 lead in an intense fourth set. Clinton scored seven straight points to take a 20-18 lead.
Jayden Johnson scored a kill for Benedict to end the Golden Bears' run. Clinton followed with three more points for a 23-19 lead.
Benedict then scored the final six points of the set. After a pair of Clinton errors, Johnson served up an ace. Another error by Clinton tied the score at 23, and Johnson followed with another ace. Benedict won the set on a Clinton attack error.
The Lady Tigers took an early 6-3 lead in the deciding fifth set. Later, kills by
Desire' Young and
Kylie Jackson gave Benedict a 12-8 lead. The Golden Bears rallied with four points to tie the score. The two teams traded points until the score was tied at 14. A kill by
Krislenn Lucas gave Benedict the lead, and the Lady Tigers clinched the match on a block by
Angelic Carter.
Young had 10 kills to lead Benedict. Johnson had 18 assists and a team-high 13 digs.
Mia Burgess also reached double figures with 10 digs. The Lady Tigers struggled with Clinton's serving, as the Golden Bears served up 22 aces.
Benedict will play their home opener on Tuesday, hosting Livingstone at 6 p.m. in the HRC Arena.
