COLUMBIA, S.C. –
Mia Burgess had a season-high 17 kills, including six in the deciding fifth set, as the Benedict College Lady Tigers took a 3-2 victory over Clinton College in a non-conference women's volleyball match on Wednesday night in the Benjamin E. Mays HRC Arena.
Benedict jumped out to a 2-0 lead, before Clinton rallied to tie the match and send it to a deciding fifth set. The Lady Tigers won the match 25-22, 25-15, 17-25, 21-25, 15-8 to improve to 7-5 overall. Clinton falls to 9-6 overall.
Burgess had six kills on eight attacks in the fifth set, helping Benedict hit .417 in the set. Benedict took control early, jumping out to an 8-1 lead. Clinton scored the next three points to make it 8-4, but that was as close as they would get. With Benedict holding a 10-5 lead, the Lady Tigers scored the next three points, with two of the points coming off kills by Burgess. Clinton answered with the next three points, but Benedict closed out the match with a kill by
Angelic Carter and an attack error by Clinton.
Krislenn Lucas had nine kills, while
Desire' Young had seven kills and five total blocks.
Willow Alls had 24 assists, while
Jayden Johnson had a double-double with 14 assists and 11 digs.
Kelsey Joshua recorded 13 digs, while
DeMyah Jackson added 12 digs.
Benedict will travel to Wilberforce, Ohio for the second SIAC Crossover. The Lady Tigers will take on Tuskegee and Kentucky State on Friday, and then face Central State on Saturday. The Lady Tigers return home to take on Savannah State on Thursday, Oct. 8.
