Kelvin Smarwt joins the Benedict College football staff as the wide receivers coach. Coach Smarwt comes to Columbia after spending the past season at University of Findlay where he served in the same role.

University of Findlay did not have a 2020 season because of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, during their six-game spring season, his receiving corps produced 1,121 total receiving yards. Smarwt oversaw the development of First Team All Great Midwest Athletic Conference (GMAC) receivers Jake Brown and Derek Lynch, in addition Marlin Richardson, who earned 2nd Team All GMAC as a receiver.

Before his stint with the Oilers, Smarwt coached the wide receivers at Robinson High School. During his two seasons with the Knights, his receiving corps produced over 3,000 receiving yards to go along with 26 touchdowns. Smarwt also spent one season at Gibbs High School where his group hauled in 14 touchdowns and produced 2,005 total yards of offense in 2017. Smarwt was credited with coaching five receivers that signed to play at the college ranks in three seasons.

Before entering the coaching ranks, Smarwt was a standout receiver at Northern Michigan University (NCAA Division II) where he hauled in 91 receptions for 1,135 yards. Smarwt was named to the All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) team after his senior season. He was also invited to the 2014 All-American Game and received a mini-camp invitation from the Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League. Smarwt holds a B.S. in Multimedia Journalism, with a minor in Public Relations, from Northern Michigan University.

A native of St. Petersburg, Florida, Smarwt currently resides in Columbia, SC. Smarwt also has one son, Kelvin Smarwt Jr.
