COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Benedict Tigers went cold in the last four minutes of the game and Paine College rallied to take a 60-55 victory Tuesday night in the Benjamin E. Mays HRC Arena.
The Tigers had a 53-48 lead with 4:47 left in the game, but missed their final four shots from the field and turned the ball over twice. The Tigers hit just two of four free throws in that final stretch.
Benedict lost for the second game in a row and fell to 8-5 overall and 7-4 in the SIAC. Paine improved to 11-5 overall and 10-4 in the SIAC.
Marcus Goode led the Tigers with 20 points and 14 rebounds.
Lamar Adkins added 10 points.
The Tigers shot 35.6 percent for the game, making 12-of-59 shots. The Tigers were 1-of-12 on 3-point attempts.
Geno Green led the Lions with 18 points, while Allen Young added 11 and Kedric Taylor chipped in 10.
The Tigers closed out the first half with a 12-6 run to take a 30-26 lead at the break.
Benedict built a 46-40 lead on a jumper by
Tydran Beaty with 12:01 to play, but the Lions scored six straight points to tie the game. The Tigers scored the next five points for a 51-46 lead, but the Lions went on an 10-2 run to give Paine a 56-53 lead.
The Tigers are home Thursday against rival Claflin.
