Lady Tigers Win Three Matches To Stay Alive At SIAC Volleyball Tournament

ALBANY, Ga. – The Benedict College volleyball team stayed alive in the 2012 SIAC Volleyball Championship by winning all three matches on Thursday.

The Lady Tigers, who were knocked into the loser's bracket with a loss to Claflin on Wednesday, defeated Paine 3-0, Kentucky State 3-1 and Stillman 3-0 on Thursday.

Benedict will play Albany State at 10 a.m. on Friday. The winner will then play Claflin at noon. The winner from the loser's bracket will then face Clark Atlanta, the last undefeated team in the tournament, in the championship game at 3 p.m.

Benedict 3, Paine 0

In Benedict's first match of the day, LaTayvia Mack had 11 kills and 3.5 blocks, and Terea Sweeting added eight kills as the Lady Tigers won 25-15, 25-8, 25-7.

Ashley Jackson had 24 assists and Lorena Leao had a team-high seven digs.

Benedict 3, Kentucky State 1

In the second match of the day, Leao had a team-high 15 kills and added 10 digs as the Lady Tigers topped the Thorobrettes 25-9, 25-27, 25-21, 25-19.

Sweeting had 12 kills and Mack added 10. Jackson had 36 assists and 10 digs.

Benedict jumped out to an early 11-1 lead and cruised to a 25-9 win. In the second set, Kentucky State, the top seed from the West Division and the two-time tournament defending champions, had a 14-9 lead before Benedict tied it at 18. Kentucky State pulled ahead 23-20 before the Lady Tigers tied the score at 24 on a kill by Asia Bailey. A kill by Mack tied the score again at 25 before Kentucky State scored the next two points to win the set 27-25. The third set was tied at 20 when Benedict pulled away to win 25-21.  The fourth set was tight as well, with Benedict tying the score at 15 on a kill by Leao. The Lady Tigers scored the next five points, with back-to-back aces by Jackson, to take a 21-15 lead. Leao clinched the match with a kill.

Benedict 3, Stillman 0

In the final match of the day, Benedict recorded 18 service aces and Mack had 16 kills in a 25-5, 25-20, 25-19 victory.

In the first set, the Lady Tigers jumped out to a 13-0 lead behind the spectacular serving of Leao. She finished with seven aces in the match. Stillman tied the second set at 10 before taking a 17-12 lead. Stillman cut it to 20-18 before Mack had two late kills in the 25-20 victory. Benedict jumped out to a 21-13 lead in the third set, and then held off a late Stillman run for the 25-19 victory, with Leao clinching the match with an ace.

Jackson had 23 assists and six digs. Mack hit .481.
