Tigers Add 37 To Football Squad

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Benedict College interim head football coach James Woody has announced the signing of 20 high school football players to national letters of intent and a total recruiting class of 37, including 13 mid-year college transfers who enrolled at the school in January.

The list includes four from South Carolina, including all-region linebacker Tarik Scafe from South Aiken High School and Devante Pinkney, a defensive end from Calhoun County High School.

The Tigers picked up 11 offensive lineman, six defensive backs, five defensive lineman and three running backs.

The Tigers went 2-8 last season. Woody took over the program on September 26 after the Tigers started the season 1-3.

“I am very very excited about the class. This is probably the best class I've put together in my years of doing this,” Woody said. “We filled a lot of needs. We think we have some talented young men, but we won't know for sure until we see them in training camp. We were able to bring in young men with great character and athletic ability.”

Woody praised the recruiting efforts of his coaching staff, including assistant coach Lamonte Massie.

“Coach Massie had a phenomenal plan,” Woody said. “All the coaches did a great job. Our new coaches, Michael Wallace and Terry Buford, did a great job coming in late in the game and working hard to bring in some excellent recruits."
