COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Benedict College Lady Tigers won their third straight match, taking a 3-0 victory over Fort Valley State in an SIAC volleyball match on Friday in the Benjamin E. Mays HRC Arena.
Benedict won 25-14, 25-17, 25-22 to improve to 11-6 overall and 8-3 in the SIAC. Fort Valley State fell to 3-18 overall and 2-7 in the SIAC.
Aaliyah Lawson and
Lorena Leao had nine kills each to lead Benedict.
Kelsey Green had a team-high 22 digs, while Lawson added 10 digs.
LaPromise Boone had 36 assists, while
Jocolby Brown had seven kills and three blocks.
Benedict pulled away from a 5-4 lead in the first game to take a 16-9 lead and coasted to the 25-14 victory. Boone scored the game-winning point on a kill.
The Lady Tigers scored the first five points of the second game and had a 12-1 lead before Fort Valley State cut the lead to 13-7. Leao closed out the game with a service ace.
Benedict started out hot in the third game, jumping out to an 8-3 lead. Fort Valley State rallied to tie the game at 16-16 and again at 18-18. Benedict scored the next four points, getting a kill from Leao and two from Brown. Fort Valley cut the lead to 23-21, but a kill by Leao gave Benedict a 24-21 lead. The Lady Wildcats scored the next point, but
Terae Sweeting closed out the match with a kill.
Benedict will host Claflin in a key SIAC Eastern Division contest on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
