COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Benedict College Lady Tigers scored the first eight points in overtime to defeat Georgia Regents University 93-82 in their season opener on Saturday night in the Benjamin E. Mays HRC Arena.
London Richardson scored six of her game-high 24 points in overtime. Richardson had a double-double with a game-high 10 rebounds. She also led the Lady Tigers with five steals.
Britenique Harrison made one of two free throws with 10 seconds left in regulation to give the Lady Tigers a 77-74 lead, then GRU's Joshlyn Belcher hit a 3-pointer with three seconds left to tie the contest.
Harrison had 17 points, seven rebounds and three blocked shots for the Lady Tigers.
KaDeeja Vaughn added 14 points, while
Zairra Harris had 11 points and
Kari Jones chipped in 10 points.
Kariel Hutt led the Lady Jaguars with 18 points, Kayla Roberts had 17 and Camille Gee added 16.
The game was a back-and-forth affair, with 11 lead changes and seven ties in the contest. Georgia Regents scored the first four points of the game, but neither team led by more than three points the rest of the first half. Georgia Regents had a 47-45 lead at the half. The Lady Jaguars had a five-point lead early in the second half, and the game was close the rest of the way.
The Lady Tigers took a 76-72 lead after a steal and layup by Richardson with 1:44 left in regulation. Gee scored on a layup with 1:17 to play to cut the lead to 76-74. Harrison's free throw with 10 seconds left made it 77-74, setting up the game-tying three-pointer by Belcher.
Benedict scored the first eight points in overtime to take control. Benedict made 7-of-10 shots in the extra period, while Georgia Regents made just 2-of-9 shots.
The Lady Tigers are on the road to face Young Harris College on Wednesday. They return home for a rematch with Young Harris on Tuesday, Nov. 25.
