Lady Tigers Take Down Fort Valley State, 69-59

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Benedict College Lady Tigers won their sixth game in a row with a 69-59 victory over Fort Valley State University on Saturday afternoon in the Benjamin E. Mays HRC Arena.

Benedict placed four players in double figures. Britenique Harrison had a double-double with 14 points and a season-high 14 rebounds. Kristine Lesane added 12 points, while Amanda Toliver had a season-high 11 points. KaDeeja Vaughn also added 11 points.

Benedict improved to 13-4 overall and 8-1 in the SIAC. Fort Valley State fell to 6-14 overall and 4-5 in the SIAC.

The Lady Tigers led by as much as 14 points in the first half, 29-15, on a pair of free throws by DaVontaye Merritt. Fort Valley State cut the lead to 24-28 at the half on a buzzer-beating 3-pointer by Carmenonique Dawson.

Benedict had a 43-38 lead with 11:16 left to play after a jumper by Destiny Betts, but the Lady Wildcats scored nine straight points to take a 47-43 lead after D'Ambria Thomas hit a 3-pointer.

The Lady Tigers regrouped and scored the next eight points, with Lesane scoring five points in that crucial stretch. Fort Valley State regained the lead, 52-51, on a layup by Thomas with 5:09 left to play. Vaughn ignited a 10-0 run for the Lady Tigers with a 3-pointer, and Benedict pushed the lead to nine points with 2:37 left to play on a pair of free throws by Lesane. Fort Valley State cut the lead to five points, but Toliver sealed the victory at the free-throw line, making five free throws in the final 38 seconds.

Benedict dominated the boards, holding a 49-30 rebounding advantage, including 22 offensive rebounds. Benedict also had 38 free-throw attempts, making 26, while the Lady Wildcats attempted only 11 free throws.

The Lady Tigers travel to Clark Atlanta University on Thursday for a 6 p.m. contest.
