DaVontaye Merritt had a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds, both season highs, to help lead the Benedict College Lady Tigers to a 71-54 victory over Clark Atlanta University on Thursday night.
The Lady Tigers won their seventh straight game and improved to 14-4 overall and 9-1 in the SIAC. Clark Atlanta fell to 8-9 overall and 4-6 in the SIAC.
Four players scored in double figures for the Lady Tigers.
KaDeeja Vaughn and
Amanda Toliver had 12 points each, while
Dorothy Brown added 11.
Mykala Jones led Clark Atlanta with 13 points.
Benedict scored the first 10 points of the game and never looked back. Clark Atlanta cut the lead to five points, but Benedict took a 15-point lead, 38-23, at the half.
Clark Atlanta cut the lead to three points on several occasions in the second half. The final time was 52-49 with 5:55 left to play. Merritt followed with a three-point play to kick off a 10-2 run.
Benedict held Clark Atlanta to 30.4 percent shooting for the game and just 25 percent in the first half. Benedict had a 55-34 rebounding advantage.
Benedict is back in action on Saturday, hosting Paine College at 1 p.m.
