COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Benedict College men's and women's tennis teams opened the 2015 season on Saturday morning against Newberry College. Newberry won the men's match 7-2 and the women's match 7-2.
In the women's match, Newberry swept the three doubles matches. In singles play,
Karla Flores defeated Newberry's Vanessa Ortiz, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1.
Esther Zelaya defeated Elizabeth Williamson 7-5, 2-6, 10-7 at No. 2 in a marathon match.
Benedict fell to 0-1 on the season. Newberry improved to 2-0.
In the men's match, Newberry swept the three doubles matches.
Takudswa Muswere defeated Newberry's Carlos Nicolopulos, 6-3, 6-3 at No. 2 singles.
Shane Latchman defeated Richard Zeh 6-3, 3-6, 10-8 at No. 4 singles.
Benedict fell to 0-1, while Newberry improved to 2-0.
Benedict returns to action against Georgia Regents University on Monday at 2 p.m. at Southeast Tennis Center.
