Lady Tigers Down Johnson C. Smith, 3-1

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Freshman Majda Cisic had a double-double with 10 kills and a team-high 18 digs to help lead the Benedict College Lady Tigers to a 3-1 victory over Johnson C. Smith in a non-conference volleyball match on Wednesday.

Benedict won the match 16-25, 25-20, 25-19, 25-20 to improve to 12-10 on the season. Johnson C. Smith fell to 3-16.

Aaliyah Lawson, the reigning SIAC Offensive Player of the Week, also had a double-double with 11 kills and 14 digs. Jocolby Brown also had 11 kills and led the team with three solo blocks and one assisted block.

Je'Nae Saunders had 43 assists.

After losing the first set, Benedict built a 21-15 lead in the second set before Johnson C. Smith rallied with five straight points to cut the lead to 21-20. Benedict closed out the set with four straight points, getting two kills by Cisic.

Back-to-back service aces by Cisic in the third set helped Benedict take a 15-9 lead. Benedict pushed the lead to 20-11. The Golden Bulls cut the lead to 23-18, but Brown and Lawson closed out the set with kills.

The Lady Tigers used an early six-point run to take a 9-4 lead, but Johnson C. Smith scored the next four points to cut the lead to 9-8. Benedict had a 19-12 lead before the Golden Bulls scored four straight points to make it 19-16. Kalena Wiggins scored a pair of kills and had a service ace to give Benedict a 23-18 lead. A kill by Kiarra Pettway made it 24-20 and Brown scored on a solo block for the final point of the match.

Benedict is back in action on Friday with a home match against Edward Waters College at 6 p.m.
