COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Benedict College volleyball team won its third straight match with a 3-0 victory over Edward Waters College on Friday night in the Benjamin E. Mays HRC Arena.
Benedict won 25-14, 27-25, 25-14 to improve to 13-10 on the season. Edward Waters fell to 6-20.
Aaliyah Lawson led the Lady Tigers with 14 kills.
Kiarra Pettway added 11 kills.
Je'Nae Saunders had a double-double with 36 assists and a team-high 11 digs.
In the first set, Benedict scored six straight points to take an early 8-3 lead. A five-point run later in the set, with Saunders serving three consecutive service aces, pushed the lead to 18-9.
In the second set, the Lady Tigers took an early 7-4 lead, but Edward Waters rallied to take a 12-9 lead. Benedict later tied the set at 16, but Edward Waters scored the next four points for a 20-16 lead. Benedict stormed back with kills by
Jocolby Brown, Lawson and Oliva Williams to make it 20-19. Edward Waters led 24-21, but Benedict fought off set point by scoring three points in a row, with two kills by Pettway, to tie the score at 24. After Edward Waters scored the next point, Benedict tied it again on a kill by Brown. Back-to-back kills by Lawson closed out the set for Benedict.
In the third set, Edward Waters again jumped out to an early lead, 5-2, but Benedict reeled off four straight points to take a 6-5 lead. A five-point run later in the set gave the Lady Tigers a 13-8 lead. Two kills by Pettway and another kill by Lawson pushed Benedict's lead to 18-11. Lawson had three consecutive kills to give Benedict a 24-13 lead, and
Arneshia Parrish scored the match-winner on a kill.
Benedict is on the road on Wednesday to face Claflin at 7 p.m.
