PALM BEACH, Fla. – The 24
th-ranked Benedict College Lady Tigers used a 12-0 run in the third quarter to take control and defeat the Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish 64-56 on Thursday night.
Regime McCombs led the Lady Tigers, now 8-1 overall, with 16 points, hitting four 3-pointers.
Destiny Betts scored a season-high 14 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for a double-double.
Terri Jacobs grabbed a season-high 16 rebounds as the Lady Tigers held a dominating 53-33 rebounding advantage. Benedict grabbed 23 offensive rebounds and scored 20 second-chance points, while Palm Beach Atlantic scored just eight second-chance points.
Janelle Cannon led Palm Beach Atlantic, now 3-8, with 27 points.
Benedict held the Sailfish to 29.4 percent shooting for the game.
The Sailfish had their biggest lead at 20-15 with 5:04 left in the first half. The Lady Tigers tied the game on a tip-in by
DaVontaye Merritt and a 3-pointer by McCombs. Jacobs gave the Lady Tigers a 27-25 lead at the half on a layup with 15 seconds left.
Palm Beach Atlantic closed Benedict's lead to 31-30 with 6:56 left in the third period, but the Lady Tigers scored the next 12 points for a 43-30 lead. McCombs and
Dorothy Brown hit 3-pointers and Merritt and Betts scored on offensive rebounds during that stretch. Benedict took a 50-39 lead into the fourth period.
The Sailfish cut the lead to 54-50 with 3:51 left in the game, but Jacobs hit three free throws to push the lead back to seven points. Palm Beach Atlantic made it 60-56 with 42 seconds left, but McCombs hit four free throws over the final 38 seconds to seal the win.
Benedict takes on Saint Leo University on Saturday in the Lynn Women's Basketball Courtyard Holiday Classic in Boca Raton, Fla. at noon. Benedict will play tournament host Lynn on Sunday at 2 p.m.
