BOCA RATON, Fla. – The 24
th-ranked Benedict College Lady Tigers rallied from a 10-point deficit in the third quarter to beat Lynn University 58-52 in the Courtyard Boca Raton Holiday Classic on Sunday afternoon.
Benedict improved to 10-1 on the season. Lynn fell to 2-8.
The Fighting Knights led 32-23 at the half and still had a 36-26 lead with 5:11 left in the third period. Benedict scored the final six points of the third period, including a 3-pointer by
Dorothy Brown, to cut the lead to 41-37 heading into the final period.
A layup by
KaDeeja Vaughn tied the game at the start of the fourth period, and the Lady Tigers took their first lead since the first period, 45-43, on a jumper by
Regime McCombs with 8:17 left on the clock. A layup by
Destiny Betts with 2:33 left to play gave Benedict the lead for good, 49-48. Lynn missed four of their final five shot attempts and had one turnover. The Lady Tigers made four of six free throws and got a 3-pointer by McCombs and a jumper by
Terri Jacobs over the final two minutes.
Benedict dominated the boards, outrebounding the Fighting Knights 48-28.
Vaughn led Benedict with 13 points, while McCombs added 10 points. Betts pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds.
Shatorria Baker led Lynn with 15 points. Benedict held Lynn to 52 points and 31.1 percent shooting, both season-lows.
Benedict is off for the Christmas holiday and will return to action on Dec. 30 at home against Coker. Game time is 6 p.m.
