COLUMBIA, S.C. –
Jordan Smith hit a 3-pointer from the right corner at the buzzer to lift the Benedict College Tigers to a 68-65 victory over the Clark Atlanta University Panthers on Saturday afternoon in the Benjamin E. Mays HRC Arena.
Roberto Mantovani hit one of two free throws with 25 seconds left to give Benedict a 65-62 lead, but Kenneth Green drained a 3-pointer from the right corner to tie the contest with 11 seconds left. After a time out, Benedict worked the ball to Smith in the corner and he sank the 3-pointer for the win.
Clark Atlanta led by as much as nine points, 57-48, with 9:19 left in the game after a 3-pointer by Cornell Barnett. Benedict scored the next six points to cut the lead to three points, 57-54, with 6:22 on the clock.
Justin Peeples led Benedict (14-9 overall, 12-5 SIAC) with 15 points, while Smith and
Deonte Johnson added 13 points each.
Barnett led Clark Atlanta (5-17, 4-11 SAIC) with 18 points.
Benedict had a 34-29 lead at the half, but the Panthers opened the second half with nine straight points to take 38-34 lead. Benedict didn't regain the lead until a jumper by Mantovani with 1:03 left.
Benedict is back in action on Thursday, hosting rival Claflin at 7:30 p.m.
