Benedict Softball Splits With Fayetteville State

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Jasmin Sledge had a two-run homer and Kelsey James had a two-run single to help lift the Benedict College softball team to a 6-4 victory over Fayetteville State University on Saturday in the second game of a doubleheader to salvage a split in the series.

Fayetteville won the first game 12-3. Benedict moves to 3-6 on the season. It was the season opener for Fayetteville State.

Fayetteville State took a 3-0 lead in the second game in the first inning. With two outs, Victoria Bratton had a two-run double in the fourth inning to score Sabriya Brooks and BerGearia Major. Sledge followed with a home run to give Benedict a 4-3 lead.

With Torcealon Kelly on third and Kelsey Green on second and two outs in the seventh inning, James singled up the middle to score two runs and give the Lady Tigers a 6-4 lead.

Fayetteville State was able to add a run in the bottom of the seventh thanks to a pair of Benedict errors and a wild pitch, but a fly out ended the game. Kendall James picked up her first pitching win of the season.

Fayetteville State jumped out to an 8-0 lead after three innings in the first game. Lapromise Boone, Green and Bratton all had RBIs for Benedict in the first game.

Benedict is scheduled to play at Columbia College on Tuesday, with the first game at 3 p.m.
