ALBANY, Ga. – Albany State University's Zuri Frost hit two free throws with one second left in regulation to force overtime, and the Lady Golden Rams scored the first six points in overtime to take a 76-69 victory over Benedict College and snap the Lady Tigers' nine-game winning streak.
Benedict (16-5 overall, 11-2 SIAC) had a four-point lead with 1:28 left in regulation, but Albany State (11-9, 10-3) forced overtime. Albany State hit 10 of 13 free throws in overtime for the victory.
Kristine Lesane led Benedict with 15 points and 12 rebounds.
Britenique Harrison added 12 points, and
Ta'Narnia Chisley contributed 12 rebounds.
Mecca Frost had 16 points, 10 assists and seven rebounds to lead Albany State.
Benedict had as much as a nine-point lead in the first half, and led 25-20 at the half.
The Lady Tigers led 35-27 on a pair of free throws by
Destiny Betts with 14:26 left in the second half. The Lady Golden Rams scored 10 straight points for a 37-35 lead with 11:28 on the clock. The game remained close the rest of the way. A 3-pointer by
Ta'Narnia Chisley gave Benedict a 60-56 lead with 2:50 remaining in the second half. Lesane followed with a free throw for a 61-56 lead with 1:47. Benedict missed four free throws in the final 28 seconds, before Frost sank two free throws to send the game into overtime.
In overtime, Albany State scored the first six points. A 3-pointer by
Dorothy Brown cut the lead to 69-67 with 42 seconds left. Albany State sealed the game at the line, making all six free throw attempts in the final 21 seconds.
Benedict is back in action on Monday at Fort Valley State University at 5:30 p.m.
