AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Benedict College softball team exploded for 60 runs to sweep a three-game series over Paine College.
Benedict opened the series with a 13-3 victory on Friday. The Lady Tigers won Saturday's doubleheader by scores of 25-12 and 22-1.
The Lady Tigers, now 10-20 overall and 5-8 in the SIAC, opened up the series on Friday afternoon by scoring eight runs in the fifth inning to put away the first game.
BerGearia Major had a grand slam.
Cecelia Lykes was 4-for-3 with two RBIs, while
Torcealon Kelly had three hits.
In the first game on Saturday, Benedict rallied from an 0-2 deficit with six runs in the second, then added eight runs in the third and nine more in the fourth.
Jasmin Sledge and
Victoria Bratton each hit a three-run double. Lykes had a grand slam homer in the fourth inning. Sledge was 3-for-4 with five RBIs, while Lykes was 3-for-5 with four RBIs. Bratton and
Sabriya Brooks were both 3-for-5 with three RBIs.
Benedict jumped out to a 9-0 lead in the first inning of the second game Saturday and cruised to the big win. Sledge hit two home runs in the game and drove in three runs. Major also had a two-run homer. Major and Bratton each went 3-for-5 with four RBIs each. Lykes and
Kelsey James each drove in two runs.
Paine drops to 6-15 overall and 0-12 in the SIAC.
Benedict takes next week off and is back in action on April 9 at Johnson C. Smith.
