Tuskegee Edges Benedict, 68-67

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Tuskegee's Joshua Culver sank a free throw with three seconds left to lift the Golden Tigers to a 68-67 victory over the Benedict College Tigers on Saturday afternoon in the Benjamin E. Mays HRC Arena.

Culver scored on a layup with 35 seconds left to play to tie the contest at 67. Benedict's Jordan Smith missed a 3-pointer with 12 seconds left. Tuskegee's Camden Foster missed a 3-pointer for the Golden Tigers, but Culver got the offensive rebound and was fouled. He missed the first free throw, but made the second.

The Tigers lost their third straight game and fell to 8-5 overall and 3-1 in the SIAC. Tuskegee improved to 6-4 overall and 2-1 in the SIAC.

Christopher Spencer led Benedict with 15 points, while Quayshun Hawkins added 14. Brennan Reynard chipped in with 13 points.

Foster led Tuskegee with 19 points, making five 3-pointers. Austin Cherry made four 3-pointers and finished with 14 points. Tuskegee was 12-of-30 from behind the arc. Tuskegee attempted 48 field goals, with 30 of them 3-point attempts.

Benedict had as much as a 15-point lead in the first half, 23-8, before the Golden Tigers outscored the Tigers 20-7 to close out the first half and cut the lead to 30-28 at the break.

The second half was close, with Benedict never leading by more than five points. A 3-pointer by Kevin May gave the Golden Tigers their first lead of the game, 60-58, with 4:18 left to play. Another 3-pointer by Foster gave Tuskegee a 63-58 lead. Benedict scored the next seven points to regain the lead, 65-63 on two free throws by Spencer.

After Tuskegee tied the score with two free throws, Hawkins gave Benedict a 67-65 lead with 50 seconds left on a jumper. Culver's layup tied the game with 35 seconds left.

Benedict returns to action with a conference contest against Miles on Monday night at 7:30 p.m.
