COLUMBIA, S.C. – The 24
th-ranked Benedict College Lady Tigers used a strong third period to pull away from Tuskegee and take a 70-58 victory on Saturday afternoon in the Benjamin E. Mays HRC Arena.
After trailing by as much as 11 points in the second period, the Lady Tigers outscored Tuskegee 18-5 in the third period, holding the Tigerettes to just one field goal.
Benedict improved to 13-1 on the season with their eighth straight victory, and 3-1 in the SIAC. Tuskegee fell to 1-8 overall and 0-2 in the SIAC.
KaDeeja Vaughn led Benedict with 16 points, while
Terri Jacobs had a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds.
Regime McCombs added 13 points and had six assists.
Rachel Brownlee led Tuskegee with 21 points.
The Tuskegee Tigerettes took a 20-11 lead in the first period and had a 32-21 lead with 2:39 to play in the first half when the Lady Tigers scored the final 10 points of the first half to cut the lead to 32-31 at the half.
Benedict kept the intense play in the third period. After Tuskegee scored the first basket of the second half, the Lady Tigers scored the next 12 points for a 43-33 lead. A pair of baskets by Jacobs and one by
Sarah Green gave Benedict a 49-34 lead with 3:20 left in the third period. Tuskegee scored its only field goal in the third period on a 3-pointer by Ashley Johnson to cut Benedict's lead to 49-37.
The Lady Tigers built their biggest lead, 67-48, on a 3-pointer by McCombs with 4:03 left to play. Tuskegee scored the final five points of the game to close the gap to 12 points.
Benedict outrebounded Tuskegee 56-38 and had a 22-8 advantage in second-chance points.
Benedict is back in action on Monday with a conference contest against Miles College at 5:30 p.m.
