COLUMBIA, S.C. – The 15
th-ranked Benedict College Lady Tigers used a dominating second quarter to defeat Albany State University 82-53 in a rematch of last year's SIAC Championship game on Saturday afternoon in the Benjamin E. Mays HRC Arena.
In a battle for first place in the SIAC East Division, Benedict outscored the Lady Golden Rams 26-2 in the second period to take a 49-26 halftime lead and held on for the victory.
Benedict improved to 19-1 overall and 9-1 in the SIAC with its 14
th straight victory. Albany State dropped to 8-10 overall and 8-2 in the SIAC.
Terri Jacobs led the Lady Tigers with a season-high 30 points and recorded a double-double with 11 rebounds.
Regime McCombs connected on seven 3-pointers for 21 points, while
Destiny Betts also recorded a double-double with 12 points and a game-high 15 rebounds.
Zuri Frost led Albany State with 16 points.
A jumper by
Sarah Green gave Benedict a 23-21 lead with 49 seconds left in a close first period, but ASU's Kayla Green sank a 3-pointer with 10 seconds left to give the Lady Golden Rams a 24-23 lead after the first 10-minute period.
The Lady Tigers came out hot in the second period, scoring the first 18 points to take a 41-24 lead after a jumper by
Destiny Betts with 3:01 left in the first half. Albany State finally snapped the scoreless streak with a layup by Kyasha Wilson with 2:12 on the clock. Benedict then scored the final eight points before the break, getting a pair of 3-pointers by McCombs, to take a 49-26 lead at the half.
Benedict pushed the lead to as much as 27 points in the third period before taking a 66-40 lead heading into the final period. Another 3-pointer by McCombs with 6:18 left to play gave Benedict its largest lead of the game, 74-44. The Lady Golden Rams trimmed the lead to 23 points before Benedict closed out the game with the final five points for the final 29-point margin.
Benedict outrebounded Albany State 48-31 and held a 23-8 advantage on second-chance points. The Lady Tigers also forced 22 ASU turnovers and scored 29 points off turnovers.
Benedict travels to face Clark Atlanta on Thursday at 6 p.m.
