ORANGEBURG, S.C. – Claflin University held Benedict to a season-low 29.4 percent shooting and upset the 13
th-ranked Lady Tigers 58-47 on Saturday in an SIAC contest in Claflin's Edward Tullis Arena.
Benedict made just 5-of-27 shots in the first half and trailed 20-14 at the break. The Lady Tigers fell to 20-2 overall and 10-2 in the SIAC. The 47 points scored was also a season low for Benedict.
Destiny Betts led Benedict with 13 points and nine rebounds.
KaDeeja Vaughn added nine points.
Claflin (13-9 overall, 8-4 SIAC) placed three players in double figures. Briana Chisolm led the Lady Panthers with 16 points. Shaniece Brown added 15 and NaBresha Hughes scored 12 points.
Benedict missed all eight 3-point attempts in the game.
Regime McCombs, Benedict's leading scorer and the nation's second-best 3-point shooter, was held to four points and missed both 3-point attempts. The four points was her second-lowest output this season.
Claflin was 5-of-18 on 3-pointers.
Benedict committed 20 turnovers to 13 for Claflin, and Claflin had a 14-7 advantage in points off turnovers. Benedict also shot 60.7 percent from the free-throw line, making 17-of-28 attempts.
The game was close with 10 lead changes and the game was tied 14 times.
After scoring just five points in the second period and trailing 20-14 at the half, Benedict came out after the halftime break and scored the first six points of the third period to tie the game at 20. Benedict took the lead 24-22 on two free throws by
Terri Jacobs. A layup by Vaughn gave the Lady Tigers a 31-30 lead heading into the fourth period.
A layup by Betts gave Benedict a 40-39 lead with 5:41 left to play, but Claflin scored the next five points and maintained the lead.
The Lady Tigers return to action next Saturday, hosting Paine College at 1 p.m.
