COLUMBIA, S.C. – Fayetteville State defeated Benedict 3-1 in a non-conference volleyball match on Friday night in the Benjamin E. Mays HRC Arena.
The Broncos took the match 26-24, 21-25, 25-21, 25-16 to improve to 14-5 on the season. Benedict fell to 10-11.
Adrionna Washington led Benedict with 14 kills.
Aaliyah Lawson nearly had a triple-double with 11 kills, 17 digs and nine assists.
V'Aira Harris had a team-high 18 digs along with nine kills.
Brianne McMillian had 26 assists.
Benedict scored six straight points in the first set to tie the score at 21. After Fayetteville State pulled ahead 23-21, the Lady Tigers scored three of the next four points to tie the score at 24. Fayetteville State closed out the set on a pair of Benedict attack errors.
The Lady Tigers rallied from a 15-10 deficit in the second set to even the match. Four straight points gave Benedict a 21-19 lead. Kills by
Arneshia Parrish and Washington gave Benedict a 24-20 lead, and the Lady Tigers closed out the set with a kill by Washington.
Fayetteville State pulled ahead 2-18 in the third set, but Benedict rallied with three straight points to cut the lead to 24-21. The Broncos clinched the set on a Benedict attack error.
Benedict had a 5-1 early lead in the fourth set, but Fayetteville State reeled off 11 straight points to take a 12-5 lead, and the Lady Tigers were never able to recover.
Benedict is back in action on Saturday morning, hosting Albany State in an SIAC match.
