RALEIGH, N.C. – Jaylin Gilbert hit a pair of 3-pointers in the final 39 seconds, including the game-winner at the buzzer, to help lift the Benedict College Tigers to a 60-59 victory over Shaw in the Shaw University Basketball Classic on Wednesday night.
Gilbert matched his season-high with a game-high 16 points, hitting four 3-pointers. He stole the ball and hit a 3-pointer with 39 seconds left to cut the lead to 57-58. Shaw's Khaliq Williams hit one of two free throws with five seconds left to give the Bears a two-point lead. Gilbert hit the game-winning 3-pointer at the buzzer.
Benedict improves to 4-5 on the season. Shaw falls to 5-6 overall.
Mike Udume and Brandon Morris had 12 points each for the Tigers. Russell Robinson Jr. led the Bears with 11 points.
The Bears held as much as a 16-point lead, 32-18, in the first half. The Tigers were able to cut the lead to nine points, 34-25, at the half on a Gilbert 3-pointer with four seconds left on the clock.
Benedict used a 13-0 run early in the second half to take its largest lead, 43-37. Udume scored eight straight points, sandwiching a jump shot between a pair of 3-pointers.
A jumper by Quayshun Hawkins with 3:09 left broke a 52-52 tie with 3:09 left to play. The Bears scored the next six points on a 3-pointer and a three-point play for a 58-54 lead with 1:16 on the clock.
Benedict is back in action on Thursday, taking on Livingstone at 5:30 p.m. in Shaw's C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium.
