COLUMBIA, S.C. – Freshman
Joel Manzano hit a two-out double in the bottom of the ninth inning to bring home
Skyler Sabado and lift the Benedict College Tigers to a 5-4 victory over Florida Memorial University on Friday afternoon at Tiger Field.
The Tigers improve to 6-2 overall after taking two of three from the Lions. Florida Memorial drops to 1-8.
Benedict was holding a 4-3 lead going into the ninth inning. The Lions used a walk and a sacrifice bunt to put a runner on second base. After a flyout and another walk, Alfredo Barroso hit a sharp single up the middle to score John Cunningham from second base and tie the game at 4-4.
In the bottom of the ninth,
Daniel Young reached second base when the Florida Memorial left fielder dropped a fly ball. After a pop out by
Andrew McCoy, Young's pinch runner
Murrell Martin was thrown out at third trying to steal. Sabado walked, setting the stage for Manzano's walk-off double.
Benedict took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second on an RBI by McCoy. The Lions tied the game with a run in the top of the third inning.
John Holleran brought home another Benedict run in the third when the Lions dropped another fly ball.
The score stayed 2-1 until the fifth inning when Holleran hit a sacrifice fly to bring home Sabado and make it 3-1.
The Lions tied the game with a pair of runs in the seventh inning, scoring the tying run on a Benedict error.
Louis Garcia pitched the ninth inning to pick up the win. Starter
Robert Troiano III went eight innings and held the Lions to just three hits.
Benedict is back in action on Wednesday with a home game against North Greenville University at 2 p.m.
