Clark Atlanta Holds Off Benedict, 74-71

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Benedict College Tigers missed two 3-pointers in the final 11 seconds and Clark Atlanta University was able to take a 74-71 victory on Thursday night in the Benjamin E. Mays HRC Arena in the final home game of the season.

Clark Atlanta opened up the second half with an 11-4 run to take the lead, and the Tigers could never overtake the Panthers. Benedict fell to 16-10 overall and 11-6 in the SIAC. The Tigers have lost four of their last six games since losing starting forward Jose Roman-Angueira to a foot injury. Clark Atlanta improved to 9-18 overall and 7-10 in the SIAC with their third straight victory.

Clark Atlanta had a nine-point lead, 71-62, with 2:07 left to play when the Tigers staged a late rally. Quayshun Hawkins hit a 3-pointer, then Brennan Reynard made a basket to make it 71-67 with 1:35 on the clock. After Damien Enoch scored the Panthers, Reynard followed with another bucket to make it 73-69 with 51 seconds left. Hawkins scored a layup for the Tigers with 30 seconds left to cut the lead to 73-71. Tim Sanders made the first of two free throws with 19 seconds left to give the Panthers a three-point lead, 74-71. Jordan Smith missed a 3-point attempt for the Tigers, and Clark Atlanta's Lawrance Freeman missed a free throw with 10 seconds left, giving Benedict one last chance. Hawkins missed a 3-point shot at the buzzer.

Reynard, one of four Benedict seniors playing in his final home game, finished with a season-high 21 points. Elan Dejourdan, another senior, grabbed a career-high 11 rebounds. Hawkins added 17 points for the Tigers.

Enoch led the Panthers with 20 points. Clark Atlanta shot 65 percent (17-of-26) in the second half and 54.5 percent for the game.

Benedict wraps up the regular season on Saturday, traveling to face Paine College at 3 p.m. The non-conference contest game against Carver originally scheduled for next Wednesday has been cancelled.
