AUGUSTA, Ga. – The 15
th-ranked Benedict College Lady Tigers closed out the regular season with a 67-52 victory over Paine College on Saturday afternoon.
Benedict improved to 24-2 overall and 14-2 in the SIAC. The Lady Tigers will receive the top seed in the East Division for the SIAC Tournament, which will begin Monday, February 29 in Birmingham, Ala. Benedict will receive a bye until Wednesday at 1 p.m. Paine falls to 9-15 overall and 6-10 in the SIAC.
KaDeeja Vaughn led the Lady Tigers with 12 points, while
Regime McCombs added 11 points.
Benedict, the nation's leader in rebounding margin, dominated the boards against the Lady Lions, holding a 60-34 advantage.
Destiny Betts had a game-high 11 rebounds, while
Terri Jacobs added 10 rebounds.
The Lady Tigers held a 14-13 lead after the first quarter, but started to pull away in the second quarter. A 7-0 run early in the quarter gave Benedict a 23-15 lead. The Lady Tigers scored the final six points of the quarter to take a 34-24 lead at the halftime break. In the third period, Paine cut the lead to 44-41 with 3:35 to play, but Benedict closed out the quarter with a 10-3 run to push the lead back to 10 points, 54-44, heading into the final period. The Lady Tigers scored the first five points of the fourth quarter to push the lead to 15 points and kept a double-digit lead the rest of the way.
