COLUMBIA, S.C. – Albany State University scored seven runs in the top of the eighth inning to take an 11-5 victory over Benedict in softball action on Saturday at MLK Park.
The second game was suspended due to darkness in the middle of the fifth inning. That game will resume on Sunday at 1 p.m., followed by the Sunday's scheduled third game of the conference series.
The Lady Tigers fell to 2-7 overall and 0-1 in the SIAC. Albany State improved to 2-9 overall and 1-0 in the SIAC.
Benedict jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a two-run homer by
Starkeira Daniel. Albany State scored a run in the top of the fourth inning, then the Lady Tigers answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the fourth.
Sharik Woods reached on a fielder's choice, stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch, then scored on another wild pitch.
Albany State tied the game with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth inning.
The Lady Golden Rams took their first lead of the game with a run in the top of the seventh. Zorria Mann led off with a single and advanced to third on an error. Danetra Jack brought Mann home with a groundout. The Golden Rams had the bases loaded, but a groundout ended the threat.
Benedict tied the game in the bottom of the seventh. Woods and
Kelsey James walked, then
Amari Lawson's fly ball was dropped, allowing Woods to score the tying run.
In the eighth, Albany State's Brishanti Weaver was placed on second base for the tiebreaker, then Ambrionna Atkism hit a two-run homer. The Lady Rams added five more runs, scoring on a wild pitch, a two-run single, a Benedict error and a sacrifice fly.
The Lady Tigers scored one run in the bottom of the eighth on a wild pitch.
Benedict was leading the second game 5-4 in the middle of the fifth inning, when the game was suspended due to darkness. The two teams will resume that game on Sunday.
