FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – The Benedict College softball team picked up its first win of the season with a 10-5 victory over Fayetteville State University in the first game of their doubleheader on Tuesday.
Fayetteville State rallied with six runs in the fifth inning to take a 15-11 victory.
Benedict improved to 1-5 on the season. Fayetteville State was playing its season opener and moved to 1-1.
Fayetteville State held a 5-3 lead after three innings in the first game. The Lady Tigers scored seven runs in the fifth inning to secure the victory. Benedict opened the fifth inning with five straight singles as
Amari Lawson,
Jordyn Saxton,
Torcealon Kelly,
Erika Dargan and
Asia Moore all reach safely. Dargan and Moore drove in one run each. Kelly scored on a wild pitch to tie the game at 5-5. Moore also scored on a wild pitch for the go-ahead run and Dargan scored on an error.
Starkeira Daniel hit a two-out, two-run homer to give Benedict a 9-5 lead.
Benedict added an insurance run in the sixth inning as Moore hit an RBI single.
Moore went the distance in the circle for the win.
In the second game, Benedict pushed across runs in the first and second innings. Moore had an RBI in the first inning, and Daniel hit her second home run of the day with a solo blast in the second inning. Fayetteville State took the lead with four runs in the bottom of the second.
Benedict scored eight runs in the third inning on five hits.
Tandreanna Conyers brought home a run on a fielder's choice. Saxton followed with an RBI single and Daniel drove in two runs with a single to right field. Lawson brought home another run with a bases-loaded walk. Moore smashed a two-out, bases-loaded double to drive home three runs and give Benedict a 10-4 lead.
Fayetteville State cut the lead to 10-9 with five runs in the bottom of the third inning. Benedict made it 11-9 with a run in the fourth inning as
Sharik Woods reached on an error, advanced to second and then went to third on a wild pitch. She came home on a single by Conyers.
Fayetteville State rallied with six runs on three hits and one Benedict error in the sixth inning, scoring all six runs with two outs. The go-ahead run scored on an error, and the Broncos added a two-run homer.
Benedict is back in action on Friday, Feb. 19 when they travel to Jacksonville, Fla., to take on Edward Waters College.
