COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Benedict Tigers rallied from a 7-0 deficit to defeat Miles College 12-9 in the first game of a doubleheader on Sunday to close out the regular season. Miles used a pair of home runs in the second game to take a 14-7 victory.
Benedict moved to 27-14 overall and 8-9 in the SIAC. Miles is now 29-15 overall and 15-5 in the SIAC. The third game in the series, scheduled for Monday, has been cancelled.
The Tigers will now await word from the SIAC office on a possible spot in the 2016 SIAC Championship. The SIAC assigned three forfeit losses for Benedict when the Tigers' series against Albany State was rained out and not made up, which puts Benedict's conference record at 8-12 on the SIAC website, tying Clark Atlanta for fourth place in the SIAC East. Benedict and Clark Atlanta split their two conferences series 3-3.
The Golden Bears, the top seed in the SIAC West Division, jumped out to a 7-0 lead after three innings in Sunday's first game.
David White Jr. helped lead a Benedict comeback by going 4-for-4 with five RBIs. He had a two-run homer in the fourth inning to put the Tigers on the scoreboard. He had a two-run double in the fifth to cut the lead to 7-5.
Shomarii Thomas went 3-for-4 with three RBIs. He had an RBI single in the fifth, then hit a double in the sixth inning that gave Benedict its first lead of the game, 10-9.
The Tigers scored six runs in the sixth inning, getting a two-run single by
Yancy Freeny, an RBI single by White and a RBI by
Daniel Young.
Angel Perez, who pitched the sixth inning, picked up the win to improve to 4-0.
Yaniel Delgado earned his fifth save of the season.
In the second game, Miles took a 3-0 lead in the first inning, but the Tigers came back to tie the game with three runs in the second inning.
Jorge Moreno drove home a run with a single,
Joel Manzano brought home a run with a groundout and
Skyler Sabado hit a sacrifice fly to score Moreno and tie the game.
The Golden Bears would increase the lead to 11-3. The Tigers would cut the lead on a sacrifice fly by Freeny and a three-run homer by Thomas.
The Tigers celebrated Senior Day, recognizing their six seniors: Delgago, Perez, Young, Moreno,
Devon Lemon and
Marcelino Irizarry.
