COLUMBIA, S.C. – Columbia College scored four runs in the seventh inning to pull away from Benedict College 10-6 in the first game of a non-conference softball doubleheader and then took the second game 9-6 to sweep on Wednesday at MLK Park.
The Lady Tigers fell to 11-17 overall. Columbia College improved to 20-16.
In the first game, the Koalas jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning, but the Lady Tigers tied the game in the second inning.
Kelsey James walked, moved to third on a double by
Sharik Woods and scored on a groundout by
Torcealon Kelly. Woods scored the tying run on a wild pitch.
Columbia pulled ahead in the third inning on a two-run homer. Benedict put together a four-run fourth inning to take a 6-4 lead.
Tandreanna Conyers and
Erika Dargan led off the inning with back-to-back singles. Conyers later scored on a Columbia College error. A double by James scored Dargan and
Amari Lawson. James scored on a double by Woods.
The Koalas tied the game with two runs in the fourth inning.
Columbia College broke the 6-6 tie with four runs in the seventh inning, getting five hits along with an error and wild pitch by the Lady Tigers.
In the second game, Columbia College jumped out to a 4-0 lead after two innings. Benedict cut the lead with two runs in the bottom of the second on an RBI single by James. She later scored on an error.
After Columbia took a 7-3 lead, Benedict cut the lead with three runs in the fifth inning. Dargan scored on a bunt by Kelly. James followed with a two-run double to make it 7-6. Columbia added a single run in the sixth and a solo home run in the seventh for the final score.
James went 3-for-5 with five RBIs on the day.
Benedict is back in action for a weekend conference series against Fort Valley State with a doubleheader on Saturday at 2 p.m.
