COLUMBIA, S.C. – Lane College's All-Conference guard Terrance Bridgeman scored 20 points, all in the second half, to help rally the Dragons past the Benedict College Tigers, 83-76, on Tuesday night in the Benjamin E. Mays HRC Arena.
The Tigers had a 34-29 lead at halftime, but the Dragons outscored Benedict 54-42 in the second half behind Bridgeman and Maurice Alexander, who scored 18 of his game-high 28 points in the second half.
The loss drops the Tigers to 7-7 overall and 4-2 in the SIAC. Lane improves to 8-8 overall and 5-2 in the SIAC.
Brandon Morris led Benedict with 25 points and a season-high 15 rebounds. Quayshun Hawkins added 24 points, hitting four 3-pointers.
Lane used a 12-2 run in the second half to take its first lead of the game, 46-43, with 11:56 left in the game. Hawkins answered with a 3-pointer to tie the game, but the Dragons scored the next seven points. Another 3-pointer by Hawkins gave Benedict the lead, 56-55, with 6:10 on the clock. The Dragons reclaimed the lead with a pair of free throws, then got a 3-pointer by Bridgeman and never trailed again.
After Lane built as much as a nine-point lead, 71-62, after a three-point play by Bridgeman, the Tigers cut the lead to 72-68 on a 3-pointer by Jaylin Gilbert with 1:14 remaining. Lane's Tevyn Roberts made the first of two free throws, then Maurice Alexander got the offensive rebound on the missed second shot and converted a 3-pointer to give the Dragons an eight-point lead with 44 seconds remaining.
The Tigers travel to Mobile, Ala., on Saturday to take on Spring Hill College at 3 p.m. Eastern.
