COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Benedict College Lady Tigers used a 16-0 run in the second quarter to surge past LeMoyne-Owen and went on to take a 63-50 SIAC victory over the Lady Magicians on Saturday afternoon in the Benjamin E. Mays HRC Arena.
MiKeisha Moore led Benedict with 17 points, while Simone Roberts added 14 points. Shirvel Luke and Destiny Betts scored 10 points each for the Lady Tigers, who improved to 9-7 overall and 5-1 in the SIAC with their third straight win.
LeMoyne-Owen fell to 1-13 overall and 1-2 in the SIAC. Teresa Mays led LOC with 18 points.
The Lady Magicians had a 20-11 lead with 7:32 left in the second quarter when the Lady Tigers went on their big run. Zairra Harris started it off with a 3-pointer and gave Benedict a 27-20 lead with a free throw. LeMoyne-Owen snapped a nearly seven-minute scoring draught with a layup with 46 seconds left in the first half. White hit a jumper before the buzzer to give Benedict a 29-22 lead at the break.
The Lady Tigers scored the first eight points of the second half, with Moore draining a pair of 3-pointers, for a 37-22 lead. Benedict led by 14 points, 45-31, heading into the fourth period. Moore opened the fourth period with a jumper to give Benedict its largest lead, 47-31, and the Lady Tigers maintained a double-digit lead the rest of the way.
Benedict is back in action next Saturday, on the road to take on Spring Hill College in Mobile, Ala., at 1 p.m.
