CHARLOTTE, N.C. –
Brandon Morris had 28 points and 13 rebounds to help lead the Benedict College Tigers to a 76-66 victory over Johnson C. Smith on Friday night and keep the Tigers unbeaten on the young season.
The Tigers improve to 4-0 on the season. JCSU falls to 3-1.
Dimitri Cook added 18 points, while
Rodney Prichard chipped in 14 points, hitting both of Benedict's 3-pointers. The Tigers went 2-for-9 from beyond the arc.
Benedict connected on 50.9 percent from the floor for the game, including a sizzling 57.1 percent in the first half. The Tigers held the Golden Bulls to 34.3 percent shooting for the game, and 30 percent in the second half.
Benedict had as much as an 11-point lead, 20-9, in the first half. But the Golden Bulls rallied to take a 36-34 lead with 1:28 left in the half. Morris scored on a dunk and
Jelani Watson-Gayle scored on a jumper with 35 seconds left in the half to give the Tigers a 38-36 lead at the break.
After JCSU took a 39-38 lead early in the second half, the Tigers went on a 14-2 run, with Morris capping the run with a 3-point play for a 52-41 lead with 13:39 left to play. The Golden Bulls cut the lead to 58-53 on a 3-pointer by Roddric Ross, but the Tigers scored the next seven points, with Prichard hitting a 3-pointer for a 65-53 lead with 6:25 left to play. The Golden Bulls cut the lead to five points again, 65-60, and once again the Tigers answered with a 7-1 run with Morris scoring on a dunk for a 72-61 lead with 2:13 remaining.
Benedict will play Livingstone on Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Claude Sanders JCSU Tip-Off Tournament at Brayboy Gymnasium on the campus of Johnson C. Smith.
