TIGERVILLE, S.C. – The Benedict College Lady Tigers rallied from an 18-point first-half deficit to take a fourth-quarter lead, but North Greenville pulled out an 87-83 double overtime victory on Tuesday night in a non-conference women's basketball game.
Benedict lost its third straight game and fell to 2-8 on the season. North Greenville picked up its first win of the season to go to 1-8.
The Lady Tigers got off to a slow start, falling behind 12-8 in the first quarter before scoring the final five points of the quarter to make it 12-9. Benedict scored the first two field goals in the second quarter to take a 13-12 lead, but the Crusaders surged ahead for a 39-21 lead shortly before the half.
Ayanna Armstead hit a 3-pointer to make it 39-24 at the half.
Benedict went on a 10-2 run to close out the third quarter to cut the lead to 53-49 heading into the fourth quarter. In the fourth quarter, the Lady Tigers used an 11-3 run to take a 62-58 lead. The Lady Tigers had a 64-60 lead with 52 seconds left, but the Crusaders hit a pair of free throws and scored a layup with 17 seconds left to tie the game.
Ay'Anna Bey hit a pair of free throws with no time left in the first overtime to tie the contest and send the game to a second overtime.
A jumper by Bey gave Benedict an 83-81 lead with 2:56 left in the second overtime, but the Lady Tigers would not score the rest of the way.
Bey led the Lady Tigers with 21 points and pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds. Armstead added 19 points while
Shannon Owens chipped in 10 points.
Benedict shot 34.7 percent from the floor (26-of-75), and 61.4 percent from the free-throw line (27-of-44), while NGU shot 38.9 percent from the floor and 78.1 percent from the line. Benedict also committed 29 turnovers which led to 27 points for the Crusaders.
Benedict travels to Florida for a pair of games this weekend, taking on Nova Southeastern on Friday and Barry University on Saturday.
