FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – David Dennis scored on a layup with 1.5 seconds left in overtime to lift the Nova Southeastern Sharks to a 92-90 victory over the Benedict College Tigers in a non-conference men's basketball game on Wednesday.
Nova Southeastern improves to 8-1. Benedict falls to 8-3.
Brandon Morris scored on a layup off a full-court pass from
Dimitri Cook with one second left in regulation to tie the game and send the contest to overtime. Morris scored with 23 seconds left in overtime to give the Tigers a 90-88 lead with 23 seconds remaining. The Sharks tied the contest with a pair of free throws with 14 seconds left. The Tigers turned the ball over with nine seconds left, setting up for Dennis' game-winning basket.
Morris had a double-double with 19 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.
Cairo Brown also poured in 19 points, hitting four 3-pointers. Cook added 14 points,
DeShawn Graham scored 12 and
Rodney Prichard reached double digits with 10 points.
Dennis led the Sharks with 31 points. Nova Southeastern ranks second in NCAA Division II in points per game, averaging 105.1 points per game. Malik Hardy added 23 points.
Benedict jumped to an early 16-6 lead, but Nova Southeastern rallied to take a 41-39 lead at the half. In the second half, the Sharks built a 60-48 lead with 11:34 left, but the Tigers went on an 18-5 run to take a 66-65 lead after a layup by Morris with 5:19 remaining.
Benedict will play its final game before the new year on Monday, returning home for the first time in almost a month when the Tigers take on SIAC opponent Spring Hill College at 7:30 p.m.
